Question by Ted R: How long would you have to train in an mma gym before they would let you enter any tournaments?
I want to start mma fighting i've been wrestling for about 6 years and kick boxing since i was about 10 i dont have any submission wrestling though im 18 right now. Also im a pretty short guy 5'6 and 1/2 and weigh 155 what weight class would i be in should i lose or gain weight?

Answer by Midway 56
How long it takes before you get into a ring to face some guy who will try and take your head off will depend on how ready you are prior to starting your training. You already have some basic skills with your backtground in wrestling and kickboxing so you have a head start on a lot of people. Get fit and have good cardio because going that bit longer might make all the difference if your opponent isn't able to last as long as you. So go in at whatever weight you feel best at, it might be a bit or below 155 but you want to fight at the weight you feel best at. Training could last from a few short weeks to months depending on how fit, prepared you want to be before entering a ring. Also, your natural abilities may allow you to learn quicker or slower than others so puting a timetable on it isn't fair at this point. This all depends on factor such as fitness, level you start at and how well prepared you want to be prior to fighting.

Question by Nature Boy: How do I start to train for MMA?
I'm currently 17 and now that I'm going to be 18 I'm of legal age to actually start MMA fighting. I want to know what are the first steps in begining this long brutal and dedicated journey. I know how tough it will be so don't tell me that bull crap. Just tell me what to do. I was a wrestler in high school and junior high so I do know some grappling and ground game but to go with wrestling should I do kick boxing or boxing which goes better?

Have limited brain cells. Be prepared to lose most of remaining said cells. Have a thirst for blood. These are prerequisites.

Train with professional fighters at lightning MMA

A good and effective MMA gym offers professional training for jujitsu, kickboxing, conditioning and wrestling. These skills are very necessary to become a good MMA fighter. Lightning MMA is a complete organization for becoming a professional fighter.

At Lightning MMA we have a variety of classes to choose from, there’s something for everyone. We have our standard Mixed Martial Arts and Jiu Jitsu classes for those just getting into the sport.

Our classes are small so every individual gets personal attention to improve their game at each class.

We also have a Cardio program for those who want to focus more on getting in shape. These classes are great for anyone looking to get a great workout and have fun at the same time. If you’re tired of running on the treadmill or the boring classes at your local Orange County gym? This is for you.

At Lightning MMA we believe that having high quality instruction is the most important part of a Mixed Martial Arts school. That’s why we make sure that you get to train with professional fighters like James Wilks and Danny Suarez as much as possible. All of our MMA and Jiu Jitsu instructors have fought in professional MMA fights.

Not only that, but we make sure that classes are small so that you can benefit from individual attention from our instructors. Take a class at Lightning MMA and you’ll notice the difference, our instructors are here to help you achieve your goals, whatever they may be.

Our gym has a cage for MMA training and more mat space than most gyms in Orange County. Also included are amenities like: shower, changing room, massage room, lounge area, equipment and nutrition shop, and much more!

A good example of efficient MMA training workouts will include strength training consisting of pulling and pushing motions like squats, lunges, rows, pull ups and chin ups and core exercises like pull ups with knee raises, one of the most difficult exercises to do properly but that will develop a core of steel. Also, planks and side planks and modified versions of these exercises.

Training for an MMA competition demands hours of dedication and practice. It may take years for somebody to learn the several MMA techniques and how to utilize it for fighting. They will start as amateurs and slowly work their way up to becoming pro fighters. They utilize exceptional fight gear that include special training gloves and Everlast MMA gloves. These gloves are designed in such a way to let the fighters to utilize their hands so that they can seize their opponent and perform a submission.

Although we have high class facilities, our primary focus is always to provide the best instruction possible. In order to get the most out of your training and have a good experience we provide everything you need to get the most out of your workouts.

Compared to other Orange County MMA gyms we have the best combination of individual attention from instructors as well as varied training partners to challenge you.

How often should i train in mma?

Question by Jeff: How often should i train in mma?
Ive just started mma and im currently doing one muai thai/kickingboxing class a week and one judo/jiu jitsu class a week. Most of the other days i am working out at the gym. I want to compete amatuer mma, am i training often enough? How often should i train per week?

Best answer:

Answer by Jin
First of all, MMA requires knowledge in many aspects: Striking, Wrestling, Takedown Defense, Submissions, Submission Escapes etc etc. If you've just started you will have to train a lot at your classes just to gain full knowledge and understanding of all these concepts.

Secondly, as a fighter your focus should be on fight training moreso then gym training. If I were you I would spar vigorously and with the best partners you can find. You will benefit not only from the fitness, but also from increased reflexes, timing, and you will get experience.

Go to 2 classes a week for kickboxing and for grappling if you can and train hard. Learn! Make sure your breaking a hard sweat or your wasting your time. Train with heart, fight with heart. Spar a lot, and work a lot on your judo and wrestling, this will work your core strength. In MMA it is proven that fighters with a wrestling background have a distinct advantage.

Hit the gym twice a week on the other days as well but don't lift too heavy, rather train in circuits. Do 5 different sets one after the other in 5 minutes, as many of each set as you can 1 per minute, with 30 second rest in between. Do this 5 times, going harder and harder each time. This will give you the endurance to last in the ring. Your strength is nothing if your too tired to use it.

Finally, use the last day to rest. Cut down you alcohol intake, don't smoke, EAT WELL, replenish your body and be disciplined. Make sure you don't train so hard you wear your body out, but you should always be hurting after a training session.

My suggestion for the week: BOX - JITS - GYM - REST - BOX - JITS - GYM... If you do two in one day always rest the next day. Rest is very important!!!

Good luck bro hope to see you in the ring sometime -_-

by j a n o ! .

Question by HAPPYMANFROMRAMADAN: How should i convince my mom to allow me to train to fight in mma?
I am 16 years old and iv had 4 amateur boxing matches and each one i had has taken a hell of a lot of convincing from my mom to allow me to fight. The thing is i do not yet know any sort of ground game and i do wish to do so, but the thing is, my mom does not want me to do any sort of mma training or fighting obviously. Is there anything anyone can recommend i tell her because she gets very worried when i tell her i want to train for this. I have snuck 1 of the amateur boxing matches by her. But she found out cuz there was a picture of me punching a guy in the face in the newspaper. Any thoughts?

Skills pay the bills. It sounds like you are probably well conditioned so get to a jiu-jitsu place and a boxing/kickboxing place and work on skills.

How do you choose what MMA style to train in?

Question by Parker S: How do you choose what MMA style to train in?
I want to compete in MMA fights but i don't know what to fight in there is so many options. How do i choose?

Best answer:

Answer by Aremay
u of course need a ground style which most ppl pick BJJ (brazillian juijitsu) or another form of juijitsu. then u need a striking style, most ppl use mui thai. but anything would work, boxing, kick boxing, tae kwan do, karate, ect. each will teach u how to exicute the style onto another person as well as defend yourself against tht style. but the easiest thing 2 do is 2 find an academy/gym tht offers MMA. tht would b the best decision 2 make if u want 2 get into the MMA game, cut out the middle men.
